Deerfield Park

Smithfield Memorial Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2929, its Ladies Auxiliary, and American Legion Balfour-Cole Post 64 will hold a joint memorial service at the Veterans’ Memorial, Deerfield Park, Smithfield, on Monday, May 25th beginning at 10:30 AM.

This ceremony will particularly honor all those who served in the armed forces of the United States during the Civil War.

A special wreath will be placed at the Civil War monument along with the wreath for the overall Veterans Memorial.

A parade of colors will kick off the ceremony at 10:30 AM with honor guards from the Smithfield Fire Department and the Smithfield Police Department.

Highlights of the ceremony will include:

· A brief history of the Civil War by Leo Kennedy, Senior Vice Commander in Chief, Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War
· Memorial gifts to be presented at each monument
· The Happy Notes will perform a nostalgic musical tribute to those who served
· The Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War as well as Tews Company, Second RI Regiment of the Revolutionary War, will be present and in uniform at their respective monuments
· Veterans of WW II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Persian Gulf War will represent their respective monuments
· Boy Scout Troop 1, Georgiaville, will present gifts to the War of 1812 monument
· A firing volley, along with three buglers playing taps will end the ceremony

This ceremony will be very solemn and inspirational for all. The public is welcome and encouraged to observe and pay their respects to our fallen comrades.

The committee respectfully requests that the youth of Smithfield and surrounding
areas please come to observe this ceremony so they will always remember the
sacrifices our Heroes endured for their freedoms.
